Are your energy levels in your 40's taking a nose dive? ⁠

While it's common to experience fatigue when we're dealing with hormonal imbalance, it's never fun or convenient. Low energy can make you less motivated to plan meals, shop, cook or exercise. ⁠
⁠
Here are three things you can do to help improve your energy and feel like yourself again.⁠
⁠
Eat at least 3x per day. One of the most common causes of low energy levels is skipping meals and significantly under eating. Even if weight loss is your goal, this type of approach is not the answer. Fueling throughout your day will provide you with more nutrients to fuel your body and will keep your blood sugar levels more stable. Remember, food is fuel. When your not getting enough or the right amounts, your not going to feel your best. ⁠

Balance your meals and snacks with protein, plant based fats and fiber rich carbs. Together, these will provide your long lasting sustainable energy help you throughout the day. ⁠
⁠
Examples include: ⁠
⁠
👍Greek yogurt (protein) with chia (fat) and berries (carbs/fiber) ⁠
⁠
👍Chicken(protein) + broccoli (fiber) sweet potato (carbs/fiber) + avocado (fat)⁠
⁠
👍Hard boiled egg (Protein/fat) + apple (carbs/fiber)⁠
⁠
⁠
Finally, prioritize sleep! It's so important. Set a bedtime and commit to it. 10-11pm is optimal. Limit screens and blue light so that you fall asleep easily. Keep your room dark and cool, watch your caffeine levels and aim for 7-9 hours per night to optimize your sleep and energy. ⁠

Have you gone through menopause? I went through menopause around age 46. Initially, I experienced intense anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia. Some key changes that I made in my diet and lifestyle that helped me tremendously were...
Reducing caffeine - I did this gradually vs cold turkey. It took about a month but I slowly transitioned from regular coffee and tea to decaf. This significantly reduced my hot flashes and night sweats. I no longer got them during the day and would only get “warm” at night vs soaking through my PJ’s. Balancing cortisol - caffeine reduction helped here along with adding adaptogens to my diet such as Holy Basil and Rhodiola. Meditation was also supportive to lowering stress and anxiety levels. Adding phytoestrogens - Natural forms of soy such as organic edamame and tempeh along with other foods such as ground flax became a more regular part of my diet. This helped to offset declining estrogen levels and made my symptoms less predominant. Hormonal changes during menopause can be confusing, frustrating and challenging. Know that you are not alone.
